About Us
Treehab’s Roots
Treehab was founded by Leah Spiller, a physical therapist trained in neurologic conditions who also has a passion for hiking and the outdoors. She was inspired by the healing benefits of nature, and saw the unique opportunity that trails provide for walking and balance practice. She believes that spending time outside allows our nervous systems to be connected to the restorative energy of nature, sparking growth, creativity, and engagement in the environment.
Leah graduated from Indiana University in 2016 with a doctorate degree in physical therapy. She has 10 years of experience practicing in a rehabilitation setting with people who have conditions affecting muscle activation, balance, strength, and endurance. She also became a certified yoga teacher in 2024 and is inspired by its restorative effects for the nervous system. She enjoys learning about her clients’ goals and developing plans that promote progress and improved quality of life.
Why do we provide therapy outside?
We want the outdoors to be accessible to clients of all backgrounds. Our goal is to provide the opportunity for everyone to safely engage in recreation, allowing options for guidance and physical assistance.
We value the evidence-based research that supports improved healing associated with exposure to nature.
Nature promotes a parasympathetic response (a calm, restful state within the nervous system) that can reduce blood pressure, decrease levels of stress hormones such as cortisol, and encourage adaptation of neural pathways.
We acknowledge that the human body is part of a living biological network found in nature. We believe that our nervous systems speak the energetic language of the environment that surrounds us and recognize this relationship for the potential to promote restoration and health.
We hope to cultivate appreciation and respect for the environment and advocate for the protection of public lands.
